on our way to the mountains
august hangs over the sycamore trees
when the car overheats
we pull off of the highway and down a side street

and search in the trunk
for a bucket or bottle that we can fill up
with water from the stream
get back in the car and catch up with our friends

but i don’t want to leave
i want to follow the stream out to the lake it feeds
where you’ll teach me finally
of love but mostly how to swim

and we’ll lay in the dirt
all water logged and forgetful
then a tractor trailer horns
like a call across the yard when it’s time for dinner
